Obstetrics and Gynecology Service

On the obstetrics and gynecology service the family medicine resident learns the techniques of normal delivery including anesthesia and the use of low forceps and vacuum extraction when required, under the supervision and guidance of the full time staff obstetricians, the 14 family physicians practicing obstetrics, and nurse midwives.

The resident learns to recognize and treat complications in obstetrical care and when to seek obstetrical consultation. Although the majority of patients are private, more than 90% of the deliveries are performed by the resident with an obstetrician or a family physician in attendance.

The resident is responsible for all gynecological admissions. Gynecological training is also provided by participation in the outpatient offices of the gynecologists. There, the resident learns the principles of diagnosis and treatment of such problems as tumors, disorders of the menstrual cycle, infections, and problems of infertility and menopause. Colposcopy is taught at each health center.

In the third year, the residents provide the majority of prenatal and obstetrical care for the family health center practices. This enables the resident to gain first hand experience in the continuity issues involved in family practice obstetrics.
