Electives

The extensive elective time in the third year permits individualized training depending on the resident's needs and interests. Electives can be structured as blocks (either one week, two weeks, or one month) or can be designed as continuity electives over the course of the year. Residents may spend up to one month in a meaningful education experience outside of Hunterdon County or extend practice experience at one of the family health centers. Electives are available at clinical departments at Hunterdon Medical Center. In addition, electives are available at Network Family Practice Residency Programs throughout New Jersey. Because of the proximity of 'Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Jersey Medical School and the Philadelphia/New York area medical schools, rotations in highly specialized tertiary care settings are readily available. Opportunities for electives in sports medicine and student health are made possible by the interest of local physicians. Also, the nationally known Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead, New Jersey, offers electives in psychiatry both from the inpatient and outpatient perspective.

For residents interested in full or part time academic careers, teaching electives are available to help the resident obtain important skills in this growing activity for family physicians.
